Movie Review: The Spirit of the Marathon

Luis and I caught the one day screening of the documentary, The Spirit of the Marathon. Overall, I thought it was worthwhile viewing. The film tracked a handful of beginning and elite runners as they prepared for and ultimately completed (except for the guy with the bum knee) the 2005 Chicago Marathon. It felt a bit like a running recruitment video - geared more toward the beginning or non-runner. Still, I loved watching the elites and learning more about their training. At one point, Deena Kastor talked about teaching her body to run through fatigue, and that really resonated with me. It was one of the biggest concepts I picked up on while training for NYC and was a major factor in relatively strong finish in NYC. I also got hooked into Daniel Njenga's story. I hope he comes back to Chicago in '08 - and never ever ever gives up. Some of the stories about the history of the marathon and women's struggles to be included were interesting as well. All in all, The Spirit of the Marathon reminded me how much I love every aspect of this sport. By the way, there will be an encore screening on Feb. 21st.
